“I am a feminist too.”

At first, it felt wrong for me to talk about female empowerment. After all, what would a middle-aged white male have to contribute? I imagined the many ways it could go wrong.

But Katharina Krentz was insistent. Several years ago, she saw the potential to leverage Working Out Loud to connect women and enable them to support each other as they grow together.

Since then, more than 6,000 people, women and men, have participated in female empowerment programs initiated by Katha. (Over 1,000 in Bosch alone, and thousands in public WOL Frauenstärken programs.)

I care deeply about these programs.

Why? Because I have three daughters and I want them to grow up in a world where they are not constrained by their sex. I want them to know that even if the system is unfair, they don’t have to wait to be lucky or to be picked. I want them to know how they can tilt the odds in their favor and make their own luck.

Because I have two sons and I want them to grow up to support and celebrate their sisters and all women.

When it comes to female empowerment, we still have a long way to go. But I have hope. My youngest son received an “I am a feminist too” t-shirt as a gift from his sister, and he wore it proudly for years. For him, it feels perfectly natural to be an advocate for equality and empowerment for women. He can’t imagine not being one.

The newest public female empowerment program starts on January 31st. It’s in German, and registration closes on January 10th. If it’s right for you, I hope you can join. You can hear more about the benefits and my thoughts on the program in the video below.
